Welcome to the NZEI Te Riu Roa AP/DP National Network

Scope and Purpose
National Executive supported the establishment of the AP/DP National Network in 2006, and the establishment of an AP/DP position on the NZEI Te Riu Roa Principals' Council to be filled by the elected convenor. Each Area Council is asked to have one representative on the national network and a Te Reo Areare representative is also invited . Local networks will be self generating, with communication strategies devised locally. The National Network may act as a reference group for AP/DP issues as and when the National Executive require.

For AP/DP's viewing this wiki, check out the issues and then make your own contributions to the Network on the Teachers Matter site. Sign up to http://teachersmatter.org.nz/group/apdpnetwork and have your say!
FYI - While this wiki is only open to the AP/DP National Network, you are free to view the contents and issues being discussed. The Teachers Matter site is open to anyone and can be used to add your thoughts or comments.

Sara Rogers - Auckland (elected Convenor for 2009/2010)
Kia ora everyone!
I'm the DP and curriculum leader at New Windsor school in the central-west Auckland area - about 25 minutes from the city centre. We are a decile 5 school. We have some 520+ students from over 20 ethnic backgrounds and have some 20 languages spoken by the families at our school - a mini-United Nations! The 2 AP's and I each teach for .3 - I currently take an extension language class - year 5 and 6 students working in level 4 of the curriculum - challenging, and great fun!
I am president of Auckland Branch (my second year) and Auckland District Council AP/DP network convenor (first year in this role). I have attended Annual Meeting a number of times over the past 10+ years, and have been involved in my branch for several years.
Career pathways, and relativities between the 4 principals' roles, release time and salaries are areas of particular interest! I would really prefer to have one agreement for all those employed as 'teachers' in schools, who are trained teachers (i.e. part-time teachers, permanent, scale A, all principals..........) even if not currently 'teaching' in a classroom.
Please contact me on/at:srogers@newwindsor.school.nz 09 6266356 ext 704 - School

Hello all,
I am the Deputy Principal of Melville Primary School, U4 Decile 2 in Hamilton. The current roll is 249, However the school community is extremely transient and this can fluctuate throughout the year. I have held this position for two years, and have been 'walking' for both. I have been teaching for a total of 9 years, not long. I have only recently become inolved with NZEI and attended Annual Meeting for the first time.

Shelley Gibson - Nelson/Tasman
Greetings,
I am the Deputy Principal. SENCO and Literacy Leader at Lower Moutere School. We are a full Primary school with a roll of around 165 located about 5 km out of Motueka, decile 4. We also have quite a turn over of students (45 new enrolments this year alone).
I currently teach a year 6,7,8 class of 8 girls and 17 boys. I have one release day a week this year but am being fully released next year to work as a student and family support worker as well as my DP,SENCO and Literacy roles.
I am the chairperson of the Motueka Branch of NZEI, was on the PTCA negotiating team last round and prior to this the Long Term Work Programme and Career Pathways as well as school site rep.
I am interested in career pathway development, time for SENCO work in addition to management release entitlements.

Matt Hall - Taranaki
Kia ora Network
I am the DP at Hawera Intermediate School in South Taranaki. We have 330 students and are mainly a bi-cultural school with 30% Maori and 67% NZ European students. Maori culture is strong and alive in our school and hence Maori achievement is considerably higher than national norms. I am a walking DP but was recently a DP at a smaller country school.
I started getting more involved in NZEI a year and a half ago and it has been a learning experience for me. I simply didn't know the depth and breadth of our Union. I am an active member of the South Taranaki Branch and am currently filling in as the Branch secretary. I am also our Branch representative on the Taranaki DC.
An area that I am interested in is the retention of classroom teachers. Retention of classroom teachers can come in many forms, sabbatical leave after 5 and again at 10 years of service, class size hence work load, support and guidance in first two years of teaching, classroom release time for planning and lastly a pay scale that represents service and hence remuneration.

Wendy Lamond - Otago
Hi I have been the DP at Balaclava School in Dunedin for the past 14 years. This is a suburban decile 8 school with 240 pupils and I teach a year 5 -6 class of 30 pupils. For the past term I have been acting principal while my principal was on sabbatical. Since her return I am being released for .4. Our school has very little ethnic diversity with few Maori or Pacific Is pupils. I have been the NZEI Rep at school since taking over the DP role and I am on the Otago District Council.
An area I consider important for DP/AP's to address is that of release time. Till this term I have not had any release time at all. I also think that sabbatical leave for DP and APs should be on the agenda for the next round of negotiations. National Standards is an area of great concern.

Jill Crawford - Murihiku-Southland

Geraldine Ryan - National Office
Kia ora koutou, great to have this Wiki now up and running - thanks Antony.
I have been working at NZEI Te Riu Roa National Office in Wellington for three years, my job is as a researcher and I move from project to project as needed. I have just moved into the Support Staff Sector Strategy team working with Ministry of Education and School Trustees Association, on a Workforce Strategy for support staff members, this will keep me busy for the next year or so. I also oversee the NZEI Te Riu Roa Scholarships, MoE Study Awards and Sabbaticals, NZEI Te Riu Roa Ethics Panel, Te Reo Maori in Mainstream and more..
I have worked as a teacher in primary and early childhood and as a deputy principal and acting principal, and like you all, I have a interest in ensuring middle/senior management is well prepared for the challenges ahead. Looking forward to working with you all... Geraldine. geraldine.ryan@nzei.org.nz
